Keeping Degus as Fascinating Pets

A small caviomorph rodent native to Chile is the Degu. The caviomorphs are characterized by their large heads, plump bodies, slender legs and short tails. They are also distinguished by the formation of their jaws and massafer muscles. The degu is sometimes also called the glitter-tailed rat though it is not related to the rat family.

The rodents are highly social creatures living in burrows. They dig together communally to make larger and more elaborate burrows than what they could do individually also. There are chains formed by degus digging together and coordinating their activities. The social behavior is also observed in case of the females who live in the same group who not only nest communally but also nurse the young of each other.

The degus can indeed become very tame if handled from an early age. It is best however that they be kept with other degus as they are social animals. These are playful creatures and are active during the daytime i.e. they are diurnal.

If encaged, the degus need a large cage. A couple of degus ought to be kept in a cage that has the minimum length, breadth and height of 24 inches, 18 inches and 24 inches respectively. The larger the cage the better it is. The cage should be made of wire so that the degus who are avid chewers cannot chew and damage the cage. However, the floor should not be made of wire and should be solid and shelves and ledges should also be made of solid material. This will ensure that the degus do not have foot problems.

It is important that a solid surface exercise wheel is introduced in the cage of the degus. The degus need regular dust baths to keep their skin and coat in good condition. So, a shallow bowl is to be placed in their cage with an inch or two of sand a couple of times per week and left for around half an hour for the degus to enjoy sand bathing.

To feed the degus high quality of chinchilla or guinea pig pellets can be given together with rodent blocks. Grass hay like timothy hay should be made available for munching of the degus all the time. A little of alfalfa hay can also be provided. Small hay racks to keep the hay stocked can be arranged for in the cage. Fresh vegetables may also be given to the degus preferably in small quantities because otherwise they may be causing diarrhea. The vegetables which are members of the cabbage family should be fed in very small quantities if not avoided altogether. The water in the bottles placed should be changed on a regular basis.

How to Care For Your Pool Cue

Now that you've purchased your very own pool cue, and hopefully followed some of the advice from earlier articles before doing so, you're going to want to take care of your investment. A good cue is relatively durable and forgiving, but all cues require care and a little bit of maintenance. We're going to be talking about wood pool cues here, graphite and fiberglass sticks are virtually bulletproof and require somewhat less care.

CASES. You are going to need a case in order to carry your new cue to the pool hall. I would think that would be obvious but yet I constantly see people coming in carrying their new cue in their hand. Come on now, you just spent your money and took the time picking out a pool cue that you love, but you can't spring for some sort of case? Basic cases are vinyl or soft-sided material. These will protect your cue against minor drops and dings, but not much else. I highly recommend hard cases just because they offer so much protection. Some cases are tested by driving a car over them without damaging the cue inside! Your pool cue can take a lot of damage in your car, in your house, and even at your billiard hall so protect it as best as you can.

While we're on the subject of transporting your cue - never leave your pool cue in your car, especially in the trunk! Wood is highly susceptible to temperature changes and to humidity, so avoid storing your billiard stick in your vehicle at all cost. The wood will expand and contract which could lead to warping, loose joints, and cracked points.

THE TIP. The tip of your pool cue (the part that hits the ball) is the most important part of the stick. You can shoot pool with a tree branch or a broom handle - or the most warped stick in the house, if the tip is solid and properly shaped you can play with it! No joking! Screw- on tips are a serious no-no, so don't even go there. "Real" tips are glued on and come in a variety of hardness. Soft tips hold chalk better and are better for applying "English" but they wear out and mushroom quickly. Extremely hard tips last forever but need constant re-chalking. Some say they make for a more accurate shot as well. A medium hardness tip should be fine for most players. The tip must be able to hold chalk, so periodic scuffing is necessary. The roundness of the tip should be maintained with a shaper. Most players compare the roundness to that of a nickel, though some prefer the tightness of a "dime curve". Shaping and scuffing too often will cause your tip to disappear quickly, so only shape and scuff when necessary. The sides of the tip should be even with the ferrule, not mushroomed out. Get yourself a scuffer/shaper and take care of that tip!

THE SHAFT. When you first purchased your pool cue the shaft was nice and smooth, and slid through your bridge hand ever-so-easily. That didn't last long, did it? The sweat, oils, and dirt from your hand will gum up on your shaft very quickly, making it sticky and not so smooth. How do you prevent this, and how do you clean it up? First, you cannot do much to prevent this from happening aside from washing your hands often and keeping them clean and dry. Some people use powder, like baby powder, on their bridge hand and on the cue. A tiny amount of powder that has been thoroughly rubbed in to your hand is okay - it makes your skin softer, but powder should never be used as a lubricant. Wash your hands! Powder will cause your pool cue shaft to gum up more quickly, and powder ruins the felt on the pool table. Nothing looks worse or plays worse than clean green felt with white baby powder all over it because some idiot thought that they had to dump powder all over themselves in order to shoot better! It just ain't so - so don't do it. It is bad for your cue and bad for the table. Have some respect, huh?

Wiping the shaft of your pool cue down with a soft cloth in the course of play will limit the amount of crud that builds up on it. Not eating or drinking with your bridge hand is a good habit to get in to as well. Using a very light leather burnishing pad occasionally is a good idea. In time however, the pores in the wood of the shaft will become completely crammed full of dirt and oils and it will need a thorough cleaning. I'm going to tell you how I do it, just remember that if you screw up you could ruin your cue. Forever. The first step is to completely wipe down the shaft (not he ferrule) with a soft cloth and some rubbing alcohol. You don't want to soak the wood with it, use just enough to clean the wood. Continue wiping with alcohol until you don't see dirt on the cloth. The alcohol removes the dirt and oil from the wood and opens the pores of the wood. Now you want to just let it sit and dry for several hours. Now it's time for wax! That's right, I said wax. You need to use 100% carnauba wax for this. Car wax is fine, as long as it is 100% carnauba wax.

Just like waxing a car, apply a coat of wax with a soft cloth or applicator and let it dry to a haze. You cannot let it dry too long, just let it sit awhile and have some patience. Once the wax has dried thoroughly you'll want to wipe it off - and immediately start working the shaft with a leather burnishing pad (or a plain piece of thick leather if you don't have a burnisher - which you should have anyway). Wrap the leather around the shaft and stoke it up and down as fast as you can (yes, it sounds dirty). The more you rub and the faster you rub the hotter the wax will become, which allows it to work into the pores of the wood. When you are finished you will have a beautiful, smooth shaft once again - but you're not finished just yet! You are going to need to run through all of the steps again, except for the alcohol part. Apply more wax, let it dry, rub the heck out of it, repeat until you have at least 3-4 layers of wax thoroughly worked into the wood. Now take care of the tip and go shoot some pool!

THE BUTT. The butt of your pool cue shouldn't need much maintenance at all. Keep it clean and wipe it down with a soft cloth during and after play. Don't hit things with it and don't drop (or throw) it on the floor. The joints will loosen up, the wood will crack, and parts will separate if you do. Then you'll have to buy a whole new cue.

"Dings" in the Shaft. Nothing is more annoying than working your pool cue through your bridge and feeling little "dings" in the wood. As hard as we try to take care of our pool cues these little dents always seem to show up - as if by magic. Here is a method I learned that will remove small imperfections from your pool stick's shaft. First, you need to wipe the shaft down with rubbing alcohol just like in the paragraph on cleaning the shaft. This will open the pores of the wood. Next, find a spot where you can place the shaft where it will not roll, and where it won't get bumped. Lay the shaft (horizontally) down with the dings that you want to remove facing up. Now, soak a very small piece of tissue with water and roll it into a ball (think miniature spitball) and place the tissue ball directly on the indented spot on the shaft. It is important that the tissue ball not be larger than the actual indent on the shaft. Let that set until it dries completely - what happens is that the wood in that one tiny area absorbs the water from the tissue and swells, bringing that spot level with the surrounding wood. In a perfect world the "ding" will have disappeared, but what usually happens is that the "ding" becomes a small "bump" - which is fine because bumps can be worked out with a burnishing pad fairly easily. Once you have all of your "dings" up to level or slightly above level it is time to wax the shaft. Follow the instructions above for the proper method to do this. Of course another way to remove dings and dents from your pool cue would be to take it to a professional, but where's the fun in that?

NEVER USE ABRASIVES. Ever. Period. That means no sandpaper, no scouring pads, no wet/dry paper, nothing. If it was designed to remove wood than keep it far away from your pool cue! You never want to remove a layer of wood just to make it smooth - you want to clean the existing wood to maintain the shape, balance, and feel of the cue.

Your pool cue represents an investment on your part, so keeping it clean and in good condition will make it last a lifetime - now that's a lot of pool playing!

Imagine not having the wood to make tables, chairs, doors, benches, frames, cabinets, draws, beds, play houses, wood chippings, worktops, shelving, guitars, piano's, batons, floors, roofing, telegraph poles, pelmets and coat racks. This list may seem long but it only touches the surface when you look around. There are lots more items we use that are made from wood, too numerous to mention here. What is to be looked at is we use in our everyday lives and is it taken for granted sometimes?

Why do we need trees and their wood? Here are a few facts about it that you may not know about. Did you know wood is used for sleepers on railway lines because it helps towards dampening noise? Did you know cedar is used for making pencils? Did you know that telegraph poles are made of wood because of its aesthetic appearance, functional efficiency and long life (did you know some poles have been up for over one hundred years)? Did you know that bark on different trees protects them for different reasons? The white Birch for example has white bark to protect it from over heating from the sun and ultimately death, this is done by the white of the bark reflecting the suns rays. The bark of the eucalyptus is very oily, so if there is a fire the oil burns rather than the tree itself? Did you know wood is recycled to make wood chippings, used for making paths in woodland areas and also for keeping weeds down?

We will never be without wood, we can't be, trees are our life source. They take Carbon Dioxide from the atmosphere and produce Oxygen and they also prevent flooding by holding onto soil. We can see why we are getting good at managing sustainable forests for future use in manufacture. We have to be, otherwise, the tree population will diminish, therefore there will not be enough Oxygen produced. Less Oxygen, more pollution doesn't bode well for society. But don't get too worried, we plant six trees to every one tree felled at this present time which means less impact on the environment and so we can enjoy everything made from wood knowing it is being replaced fully.

How to Decorate a Small Bathroom on a Shoestring Budget

Carol has just purchased her first home and the guest bathroom is 7 feet long by 5 feet wide. It is an older home and her bathtub and sink have seen better days. The paint on the walls is old and faded and the white floor tiles are now a worn out grey.

The first thing I noticed about this bathroom when I opened the door was the fact that it does not have a window. This makes the space feel dark and closed in. The layout of the bathtub, sink and toilet is what I call the "builders standard layout." The tub is located at the back of the room up against the back wall, the sink is positioned immediately to the right upon entering the room and the toilet is between the tub and the sink. Carol has every reason to want to update this space. Frankly, it was just the opposite of warm and inviting. It was drab and dreary.

Needless to say, because Carol had just spent her life savings on the purchase of her home, there was not a lot of money in the budget to turn her eye sore of a bathroom into a place of escape and tranquility. Not knowing how to accomplish this task on a shoestring budget, she asked me if I would offer her some advice. So here is the advice I gave Carol.

Advice #1: Refinish the bathtub and sink:

Sounds expensive, but it is not. Carol could pay to have someone refinish her tub and sink or she can do it herself. Refinishing your tub is a task that anyone who know how to paint with a roller can do. Purchase a "Do It Yourself" refinishing kit from your local home and garden center. It includes a special primer and paint that is made especially for bathtubs and sinks. I did a Google search for the term "bathroom refinishing kit" and discovered several online merchants that sell the kits. For about she can purchase one of these kits and before the weekend is out, Carol can rest assured that there are no signs of the fact that her tub and sink was built in 1950.

Advice #2: Replace the toilet:

The toilet in this bathroom is so old you cannot see the white porcelain any longer. All you see when you look into the bowl is a rusty brown. When the inside of your toilet is fifty different shades of rust rings, it is time for a new one. The cost to replace the toilet will range anywhere from 0 to several hundred dollars. Here is where Carol should call a professional. Toilets must be installed correctly or they will leak, and leaks lead to water damage, and water damage leads to a very expensive repair job. So, CALL A PROFESSIONAL!

Advice #3: Pull up the worn and cracked linoleum:

Floors are the foundation to any design scheme. It is the number 1 important feature in a room. Floors are where any room design should start. It will set the tone for the entire space.

Because Carol has a small bathroom, she has several options for new flooring material. By far the cheapest way to go would be to lay some new linoleum down. This could run anywhere from - . Another option is to install decorative tile on the floor. This could cost anywhere from - 5. It does not take a lot of tile to cover the bathroom floor, maybe 2 - 3 boxes. So, if she wanted to, she could splurge a little and go for a high quality tile. After all, this is the one item Carol will have to live with for a very long time.

Advice #4: Paint the bathroom walls:

Nothing gives a room an instant make-over like a fresh coat of paint. This is by far the smallest room in the house so one gallon of paint for about will be more than enough. Because this is a small room without a window I suggest staying away from dark colors. Dark colors will make this space feel even smaller than it already is.

Choose a light color of paint. Light colors tend to brighten up a space and evoke a happy, calm, and inviting feel. Light colors cause the body to relax and are also used as a way to reduce stress.

Advice #5: Create the illusion of having a window:

Carol can "trick" the eye into believing that there is a window in her bathroom by using a mirror. Stand in the doorway of the bathroom and envision where you would install a window if you had the opportunity to do so.

1) Install a non-decorative mirror in that spot instead. It is important that the mirror is your basic mirror without any type of framing. A framed mirror will look like a mirror you huge up in a bad spot on the wall.

2) Now, install a curtain rod "over" your mirror the same way you would if it was a window.

3) Hang up curtains that have a valance included with the set. A valance is a short curtain that hangs between the two side panels. It is used to hide the curtain rod when the curtains are pulled back. These curtains will hide the top as well as the sides of the mirror.

4) Use the "tie-backs" that came with your curtain set and tie back both sides of the curtain. If you curtains did not come with tie backs, they are sold separately. Be sure you purchase ones that complement the curtains.

5) Install a window planter box (found at your local garden center) across the bottom of the mirror in order to hide the bottom. The planter box should completely cover the bottom of the mirror. Because of this, it is very important that the planter box be slightly longer than the mirror so that you can attach the planter box to the bathroom wall. Use two screws to secure the planter to the wall. If you do not have "studs" in the wall where the screws need to go you must use "anchors." Ask your local hardware salesman what these are if you do not know. Do not worry, anchors install very easily and quickly. No special tools are required.

6) Plant a beautiful assortment of silk flowers in the box. They can be found in the craft isle of your local home and garden center or craft store. Shop around. You might be able to find a silk floral arrangement that already come in a planter box that fit your "window."

I do not recommend planting live plants. Most people keep the light off in the bathroom when it is not in use and do to the lack of light you will end up with is a planter box full of dead plants.

Advice #6: Accessorize:

Here is where the fun begins. Because Carol has a small bathroom all she needs to pull her design scheme together is a few accessories.

a) Go to your local bed and bath store and purchase the most beautiful shower curtain you can find. Do not focus on price, FOCUS ON QUALITY. This is a very important element. except for the floors, it is the most visible item your guest will see. EVERYTHING rests on the shower curtain. If it costs more than you have budgeted for, save money someplace else. Keep in mind that quality does not mean loud or flashy. The shower curtain can be very simplistic in style. Quality means that after many showers it will still look new and fresh years from now.

b) Here is a designer secret that I have not shared with many people. Oftentimes, I will purchase a regular curtain that is not labeled "shower curtain." I'm talking about curtains one might hang up in the bedroom. I purchase a grommet kit from Wal-Mart and simply hang a high quality, heavy duty plastic shower curtain liner on shower hooks and then I add the curtains to the same hooks. Wal-Mart sell heavy duty shower curtain liners in several different colors. Purchase one that will blend well with the main color of your curtain.

c) Add a coordinating area rug in the center of the floor.

d) Every bathroom must have some sort of pleasing aroma. Purchase a candle lantern that blends well with your design scheme and add a scented candle inside.

e) Place the candle lantern on the back of the commode. Just before your guest arrives be sure to light the candle so your bathroom will be filled with a wonderful aroma. For safety reasons, when purchasing a candle lantern, be sure you purchase a style that COMPLETELY enclose the candle. You never want to leave an open flame unattended. Visit The Candle Lantern Shop. f) Add a couple of smaller accessories to the back of the commode to complete the look. Keep it simple and do not add anything that will fall off or cause a hazard when the toilet is in use.

g) If you have space around your sink, add a coordinating liquid soap dispenser and a tissue box. Purchase a decorative towel ring and install it on the wall where your sink is. Hang a coordinating hand towel for your guest to use after washing their hands.

h) Install an additional towel bar rack on the largest wall. Hang 2 coordinating towels and 2 hand towels. Layer the towels by placing the large one on the bar first and then a hand towel on top of it.

i) Now stand in the doorway of the bathroom and take at look at all that you have accomplished. Look for any flaws in your design. Did you add to many accessories or maybe not enough? Ask yourself how well do your colors blend together. Have you used one color too much or maybe not enough? Do your bathroom have that WOW! factor that you were after?

As you can see, it is not difficult to turn a small outdated bathroom into a place of peace and tranquility. It does however take a little pre-planning and effort on the part of the homeowner. So, stop complaining about how outdated your bathroom is. Roll up your sleeves and go to work at fixing the flaws. If you start on Friday, you should be finished by Sunday. The Best Driftwood is From Trinidad!

Driftwood has always been a fascinating material to use for fine arts, hobby crafts, and building animal and plant environments. Driftwood can be purchased at pet stores and craft supply shops. But it is free if you are willing to go look for it!  I can't think of a more enjoyable past time than combing a lovely beach in search of these washed up treasures.

Not all driftwood is from saltwater beaches. You will find driftwood on the shores of large freshwater lakes and brackish river deltas. The type of driftwood you find on any beach depends, of course, on what kinds of trees are growing in that geographical area.

The area of Trinidad, for example, offers some of the most beautiful driftwood in the world. Because Trinidad's northeast mountains and hill regions hold vast amount of old growth rainforest and because there are so many rushing rivers running from those forests to the sea, there is ancient, petrified driftwood to be collected by the basket full. But you have to get to the beach before the beach cleaning crew rakes it up and burns it! Here is a short description of how that wood became 'driftwood'.

The rainforests of Trinidad are full of towering trees with names like Mora, Balata and Tamarind, and the forest floor is littered with the rotting remains of these giants after they fall. Imagine orchids and lianas clinging to the buttressed roots and twisting branches of these huge trees while they thrived perhaps hundreds of years ago. Imagine one such tree. At some time in its life that tree fell over. It was pushed over in a storm or maybe cut down by farmers and left to rot on the forest floor. There it did rot and with each rainy season more and more bits and pieces of this tree wash into the river nearby. Now, with each rainstorm that passes over Trinidad that same river becomes a torrent rushing to the sea carrying this wood with it. By the time it reaches the beach it has become hard like bone, the soft outside layers of the wood are gone and all that is left is what we call 'bone'. After a storm, the beach is piled with wood from the river. While searching for this bone driftwood, you are also likely to come across similarly ancient bone wood of trees living closer to the beach such as Almond, SeaGrape and Hogwood.

Many of these pieces of bone driftwood are beautifully gnarled and grained and will last for years and years. It will not break or decay. Each piece of driftwood is a work of art unto itself, really, but when sanded and buffed with beeswax the wood reveals more of its lovely grain and gorgeous colors.
